After noticing that your garage door is no longer even as it moves up and down, you may have noticed a clunking or snapping noise. After investigation, you may have found that one of the springs appears stretched or has a crack in it.

Since you are still able to operate the garage door despite its unevenness, you may feel that you can continue to do so. However, there are a couple of reasons why you should not neglect having the springs repaired or replaced by a professional as soon as possible.

1. Tension Produced During the Door's Movement Will Cause Extra Strain on the Springs

One reason why you should not delay in having your garage door's damaged spring repaired is that continued movement will put extra strain on it. As the door moves, the springs are responsible for holding the door in place as well as pushing and pulling the door as it opens and closes. This creates extra tension that normally the springs are able to handle.

However, if one of the springs is damaged, the tension will become too much for the already vulnerable metal. After being used too many times, the spring could snap completely, which would make it difficult to use your garage door at all.

2. Uneven Movement Can Cause Damage to Both the Rollers and the Tracks They Travel In

Another reason why you should not ignore the problem with the springs is that the issue will affect the rollers and tracks. Normally, the rollers stay in place as they travel along the tracks, allowing the door to open and close smoothly.

However, if one of the springs is making the door move unevenly, the rollers will no longer move correctly through the tracks. One of the rollers could pop out completely. Or, if the rollers are pressed against a weak spot in one of the tracks, the track could bend or break.

When your garage door's springs are stretched or cracked, continuing to use the door will lead to further damage. The tension placed on the already vulnerable springs will cause strain on them, which can cause them to break and become completely nonfunctional.

Also, when there is uneven movement of the door, the rollers will no longer glide smoothly through the tracks, which could cause them to jump out or cause damage to the tracks. Instead of ignoring the issue, contact a company in your area that offers garage door repair services to have them send someone out to repair or replace the springs to restore the proper movement of the door.
